Esme's Blog: We Need Laws Against Designer Drugs
This week in Blaine one young person died and 10 were hospitalized after taking the designer psychedelic drug 2C- E. According to investigators the young people bought the drug legally over the Internet.
Now lawmakers are scrambling to come up with state and federal legislation that would make this and other designer drugs illegal.
Anoka prosecutors are trying to go after the person who bought the drug by pursuing 3rd degree murder charges. But if the drug were illegal prosecution would certainly be easier.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who is sponsoring a bill to make synthetic marijuana illegal, is exploring adding 2-CE to her legislation. State lawmakers are also considering legislation. Our laws need to keep up with the blinding speed of drug dealers abilities to manufacture and profit from these deadly products.
