BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — XXcel Energy Inc. says it has abandoned plans to build a $400 million wind farm in southeast North Dakota.

The Minneapolis utility says in a statement that potential harm to endangered or threatened birds played a “major factor” in scrapping the so-called Merricourt Wind Project in Dickey and McIntosh counties.

The company says it cancelled its agreement Friday with enXco Development Corp. due to “uncertainty in the cost and timing in mitigating” the impact to the whooping crane and the piping plover. The utility had said that it hoped to have the 150-megawatt project built by the end of 2011.

The utility is attempting to meet a Minnesota standard of generating 30 percent of its power from renewable energy sources by 2020.

I think the key word is “renewable”. What about coal or nuke is renewable?

    1. ash says:

Coal takes millions of years to form. For your information that is not renewable. And Nuclear? Yeah that is a great idea after what happened in Japan, maybe in another million, humans wil be so mutated from pollution that we wont even need

  3. eric says:

I’m glad the friggin whooping crane is stopping us from attaining energy independence. friggin retarted.

  4. Fed Up says:

Figures. The green movement won’t be happy until we are all living in caves, wearing hemp clothing and eating berries.

If the wind farm can’t be built due to a few bird deaths, imagine what another coal or nuclear plant will do to the birdies.
