Minn. GOP Eyes $133M Through Tax Code Crackdown
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Minnesota House Republicans are ready to spend millions in hopes of reaping millions more from people and businesses not paying all of the taxes owed.
A bill directing the state Revenue Department to seek an outside contractor that uses special computer modeling to determine audit and collection targets. The vendor would be partly paid based on the amount of new revenue yielded, but the bill contemplates spending more than $30 million on it.
The goal is $133 million in new revenue over the next two years. If the program falls short, the governor would have to enact agency budget cuts.
The tax analytics bill sped through the House State Government Finance Committee on Friday. A similar version has cleared the full House in a broader budget bill.
The technology looks for patterns, uses predictive modeling and employs other methods to flag suspect accounts.
