Minn. Honors Law Officers Killed In Line Of Duty

MAHNOMEN, Minn. (AP) -- Minnesota marks a day Sunday to honor law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, including two who gave their lives in 2010.

Gov. Mark Dayton is attending a memorial service for fallen officers on the state Capitol grounds. He also issued a proclamation marking the day and ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at government buildings in the state.

Dayton's proclamation says 257 Minnesota law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty since 1881.

Maplewood Sgt. Joe Bergeron was killed on May 1, 2010, and Mahnomen County Deputy Christopher Dewey passed away on Aug. 9, 2010. Both officers' families are dedicating their names at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. on Sunday.
