Preps Underway To Launch Massive Clean-Up Effort

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Volunteers unloaded chairs, rakes and shovels from trucks at Brookdale Mall on Friday, preparing for 2,000 volunteers Saturday.

John Fruetel is coordinating the effort.

"We'll see how it goes. I think we are ready to go. I think it will be a great day for everybody," he said.

Macy's inside Brookdale has been transformed into a staging area for the volunteers who will register and then be bussed to a particular location on the north side of Minneapolis.

"They will be picking up light debris, branches and those types of things, limbs that are down, helping the neighbors and placing them on the boulevard," Fruetel said.

There will be two shifts, one in the morning and another in the afternoon.

Fruetel said the response has been overwhelming.

"Typical Minnesotans. You know ready to help which is really awesome especially from the group of professionals plus the volunteers and the volunteers from the faith community. Everybody's been coming out to help in the effort," he said.

One note of caution, there is road construction getting to Brookdale, so you'll need to use the shingle creek parkway exit to get to the mall.
