Wisconsin Man Dies After Jump Into Chippewa River

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) -- Authorities in Chippewa County say a 34-year-old man from the Eau Claire area drowned after jumping into the Chippewa River.

Authorities have not released the man's name.

WEAU-TV reports that the incident happened Sunday afternoon on the north end of Lake Wissota. The man was on a pontoon with friends and they stopped near the cliffs in the township of Eagle Point.

The man climbed up the cliff and dove into the water, but never resurfaced.

Divers found him and took him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Another person died after diving off the same cliffs two years ago.
