JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Sarah Palin’s version of Paul Revere’s ride has triggered a tug of war over the Wikipedia entry on that historic event.

Dozens of changes were made to the Revere page on the Internet site Sunday and Monday after Palin claimed Revere’s famous ride was intended to warn both his fellow colonists and British soldiers. The page features a padlock, which Wikimedia Foundation spokesman Jay Walsh said can provide a cooling-off period when there are numerous attempts to edit a site.

Actually the site has been “semi” protected since November due to what one online editor and contributor, Jeff Schneider, called excessive vandalism. Students sometimes alter pages featuring historical people or events, he said. That protection guards against edits from unregistered users, as well as edits from unconfirmed accounts or those that aren’t at least four days old with at least 10 edits.

A chat area connected to the page included sections headlined “Sarah Palin’s army needs to go away,” although Walsh said it’s difficult to tell with any certainty whether those seeking to add Palin’s statements are her supporters.

While Wikipedia allows people to add information or make changes to pages, an army of dedicated users worldwide seeks to ensure the information is accurate. This is especially true for articles related to significant historical facts or people, with volunteer editors striving to keep out information that’s not proven, well established or coming from a neutral point of view, Walsh said.

“This isn’t a place where you bring new research,” Walsh said.

Schneider said the flurry over the Revere article is very common. “When an item is in the news, it brings in the masses,” he said in an email.

But Palin interview videos weren’t considered “reliable sources” for updates to the site, Schneider said, adding that he was the first to “remove someone adding historic information based on Palin’s interview.”

Palin defended her position on Fox News Sunday, insisting she hadn’t bungled her American history.

“Part of his ride was to warn the British that were already there. That, hey, you’re not going to succeed. You’re not going to take American arms. You are not going to beat our own well-armed persons, individual, private militia that we have,” she added. “He did warn the British.”

Days earlier, during a bus tour of the East Coast, Palin said Revere warned the British “by ringing those bells, and makin’ sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be sure and we were going to be free, and we were going to be armed.”

While colonists were British subjects when Revere made his ride, historical accounts indicate secrecy was critical as Revere sought to carry out his mission to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that British troops were coming to arrest them.

WCCO, please do not bother wasting yours or your viewing publics time posting anything about this person. She is not worth holding any public office, nor the ink you use to print.

Paul Revere is a TRUE American hero!

    1. Sara says:

Thank you Ryan. And you know it is important that we teach our young ones about our finest American founding father heroes, like Benjamin Franklin who wrote our beautiful Declaration of Bill of Rights Amendment. Ryan, it is our heroes we should hold dear to us rather than allow the out of control liberal media to twist my words. We need to remember what good ol Benjamin said when after the flood when he left the ark….

  6. M B says:

Wow, another “OMG my hero person said something! It must be right so I’ll rewrite the history books because of it!” situation.

This is where the state, “If you say it enough, whether it’s true or not, people will start believing it” comes to effect.

It’s so against the scientific method that it makes one’s head spin. But, when have people like that ever followed (or ever learned) about the scientific method.

So the “shot heard round the world” was in New Hampshire right???

  8. wHATEVER says:

Are they trying to take the dumb out of her by injecting it into us? I cannot imagine how horrible of a president she would be.

  9. Gloria says:

I fear that S. P. will influence the history lessons children need to learn accurately. I cannot even imagine what it would be like to be her children and have her helping with homework. (They probably help her write her speeches…)

Anyway, this individual is a danger to our nation and our world in many, many ways. I cannot stand her, and I wish she’d stay in Alaska and keep an eye on Russia for us…Just so she doesn’t report on anything she observes!

    1. jd says:

she’s a decoy set out to distract us from what really is going on.

Naaaa – the shot heard round the world was blasted from somewhere in MN’s 6th District.
It remains a secret tho — MB has the info. Luckily for her God gave it to her. Palin just got her info from outer space, in the next galaxy over.

When 2013 comes around MB will publish her 99th book on the hows and whys, Palin will be dancing at BJ’s and another dem will have ousted BO and be sitting atop the throne.

“Stupid is as stupid does.”—-Forrest Gump.

Well political sports fans, it’s that time again where stupidity will reign supreme in another electoral period! All of this inane ‘change-at-all-costs’ political attitude along with the rampant ignorant revisionism diatribes are making this country the political laughing stock of the globe!

What politician can be believed anymore is anyone’s guess? These are the people who want to be President? Are you going to vote for stupidity and ignorance?

What has happened to the American ethic and spirit that this nation is noted for? This nation is a a short step from a real full-blown Depression and there is more press with discourse over a self-indulgent Congressman ethereally “tweeting” his underwear and skinny physique to some unknown females! Is this what his constituency wanted when they voted for him? Makes you wonder!

The country is a short step from Depression with severe economic collapse with rabid partisan politics ruling the day with ignorant statements spewing forth with no mention of constructive ‘compromises’ or progressive political leadership rising above all the mayhem. Is this the All-American way to rise above common adversaries?

Is hack/spam attacking Wikipedia and other general information compendiums with false historical revisions going to solve the major crises that face us all?

Come on, folks, let’s pull together for the common good. Quit your belly aching and help the people you voted for do their jobs in the old fashion American way!
Stop complaining about the President with derogatory euphemisms that border on the subtle racism you say you’re against. You may agree with his political leadership but do so with the respect all Americans have shown their leadership.
Stop complaining about the political parties but help them get back to their core political precepts. If you can’t agree with the primary two parties then join the one the reflects what you feel or believe. Do so with some intelligent research to such.
Last but not least, stop complaining and research the issues that affect you or us the most. Just because some politico come-lately says something as factual–check it out! We live in an age where 140 characters in eText is consider hard news when it concerns complex life-or-death &/or quality of life issues.

It’s time to rise above the apparent present political stupidity and become a great nation again. It takes everyone, of whatever political leanings, to do so. That’s the American Way.
