Minnesota's Jobless Rate Could Jump In A Shutdown

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- There's a sobering prediction about Minnesota's jobless rate if there's a state government shutdown on July 1.

Hamline University professor David Schultz has analyzed the employment implications of a government shutdown.

He said if all 38,000 state employees who received notices are laid off, the state's jobless rate would jump from 6.6 percent to 7.8 percent.

If you add in private businesses affected by a shutdown:

"I could see us easily going from a 6.6 to over 8 percent unemployment rate almost instantaneously," said Schultz. "The state's economy grinds to a halt."
