Ex-Scout Leader Sentenced To 21 Years For Sex Assaults

HASTINGS (WCCO) -- A 46-year-old former scoutmaster has been sentenced to more than 21 years in prison for molesting young boy scouts.

Peter Stibal, of Burnsville, was sentenced to exactly 253 months by Judge Edward Lynch for multiple crimes, including criminal sexual assault and possession of child pornography.

According to the criminal complaint, his troop frequently met at River Hills United Methodist Church.

Prosecutors say the assault of one boy happened between 2003 and 2005, while the boy was 13 to 15 years old. He was also found guilty of sexual assaulting three other boy scouts who were between the ages of 11 and 14.

"We are pleased to have brought Mr. Stibal to justice in all of these cases," said Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom. "The degree of manipulation and planning used to commit these sexual offenses, coupled with the defendant's violation of a position of trust, warranted the lengthy prison sentence the defendant received today."

Stibal was also found guilty of possessing child pornography. He was sentenced to 60 months in prison to be served concurrently with the 253-month sentence.
