Charges Filed In 1996 Minneapolis Homicide

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 34-year-old man has been charged in the 1996 murder of Michael Baldeagle.

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office charged William Dallas Chaboyea with second-degree murder for allegedly shooting and killing Baldeagle in an alley on the 1700 block of East 27th Street.

The shooting occurred just after 11 p.m. on May 28, 1996. According to a criminal complaint, Baldeagle walked into the alley to talk with a group of people when a fight ensued and he was shot and killed.

Baldeagle's death was determined to be a homicide. Since that time, investigators worked to identify and locate the people in the alley at the time of the shooting.

According to the criminal complaint, Baldeagle was a known member of the gang Native Gangster Disciple. Police say the other people in the alley that night were members of the Native Mob gang -- which is a rival of the Gangster Disciples.

Police say Baldeagle walked up to the rival gang and flashed the Gangster Disciple gang sign. An argument followed and Chaboyea allegedly pulled out a shotgun and fired once at Baldeagle, according to the complaint.
