2 Kayakers Rescued From Lake Superior Near Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) -- The U.S. Coast Guard was rescuing one kayaker from chilly Lake Superior when they learned another kayaker also needed help.

A vessel coming through the Duluth harbor entry alerted the Coast Guard Wednesday that a kayaker had taken on water.

While the Coast Guard was helping that kayaker, the Aerial Lift Bridge operator alerted that another kayaker had taken on water and was out of his kayak.

The Duluth News Tribune reports both men were rescued within five minutes of the call. Both were brought back to the station and left by ambulance.

Petty Officer Nicole Rice says both were wearing life jackets but not wet suits and were "very cold." She says the men, from the Twin Cities, were in their mid-20s and in the same kayak party.
