Blue Herons Return To The Wild After May Tornado

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The blue herons that had their homes destroyed by a tornado were released back into the wild on Monday.

The birds were just chicks at the end of May when a tornado came through north Minneapolis ruining their homes along the Mississippi River. They have spent the last few months at the Wildlife Rehab Center in Coon Rapids.

"We've had them for about two months. They were probably about three weeks old when they were rescued so they were pretty helpless when they first came in," said Phil Jenni with the Wildlife Rehab Center.

Jenni said the chances of survival for these birds is pretty good, but every time they do a release like this he says they have some birds that just aren't quite sure what to do.

That was the case on Monday when one of the herons just kind of stuck close to shore for a few minutes before joining the others.
