MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Ellen DeGeneres continued her tour of Minneapolis Tuesday to promote her new time slot at 4 p.m. on WCCO, starting Sept. 12 — and created quite a stir both downtown and at the WCCO-TV studio.

During her tour, Ellen stopped by the Mary Tyler Moore statue outside Macy’s to greet fans — and the eager Ellen enthusiasts were more than ready for her arrival.

Chants of “We Want Ellen!” lasted for hours before the star’s highly anticipated visit.

Mayor R.T. Rybak even declared it Ellen DeGeneres Day in Minneapolis — but she was hoping for a little more. Ellen asked Rybak, why not a full, national year? Instead the two met in the middle and settled on a full Ellen DeGeneres week.

Fans were so excited to see Ellen, they got up at the crack of dawn to wait in line for a chance to see her.

Jonathan Fishbine arrived at 6:45 a.m. in order to be the third person in line.

Check out a few of her stops along the way. (And the surprise she had in store for our morning meteorologist Mike Augustyniak.)

I adore her and she has done an amazing amount of good for other people. She is a beautiful human being and a wonderful role model for the young generation. WE LOVE YOU ELLEN!!!

    1. meow says:

and a HUGE thanks for WCCO for the coverage

    2. Phid says:

Role model? No, she is not.

    3. No role model says:

Ya right Great role model for who. B S

  2. Melissa says:

ha ha, the clips of her with Mike will keep me laughing all day long! Thanks Ellen you are fantastic!

  3. Well Then.... says:

I am not really a big fan of Ellen…so I am not sure why this is big news. WCCO needs to do a better job at picking what stories to show people. There are too many other stories out in the Twin Cities that requires our attention….we need to spend more time focused on the Vikings Stadium, the building of the new Hastings bridge, and how well the State is doing on cutting the grass on the 494/694 corridor…these are more important than reading a story about Ellen….

    1. ha ha says:

Geez, lighten up. Don’t you ever need a little humor in your day? Personally I get sick of all the negative all the time. This was a good laugh for the day.

      1. meow says:

        Agreed with ha ha

It’s OK to be silly and light once in a while. Ellen brings laughter and joy to people all over the country and even in parts of the world. She is admired by thousands of people. I wish we had more people like her in MN.

        1. Well Then.... says:

          Now that’s funny….

        2. KettlePot says:

You mean like how every tv show also shoves straight relationships in our faces? I cant even watch a commercial without seeing some guy or girl getting all hot and bothered on each other over something as simple as shampoo. And you complain about one person’s sexuality representing a shove-it-in-your-face attitude? Just like your comments represent your views being pushed into my face. Your horse is too high. Get off it.

          1. Kenwood says:

When did you, Jack, choose to be straight? Can you recollect when it happened?

            1. Pat says:

When did you choose to be clueless?

People are born detesting gays. It’s thousands of years of evolution. We were born this way.

              1. No kidding says:

                Well said.

        3. Jake says:

I don’t agree with that. I was a little bored with the focus on sexual orientation with her first show, but I don’t see that as the focus of her humor, really. While it’s a part of her personality (and one that does not resonate with me), she has a right to her craft as a humorist. I think she is just lighthearted and funny without being preachy, at least at this point in her career.

        4. dphilips says:

I have to agree with Jack. She rally isnt funny

        5. meow says:

People who are secure in their own sexuality and religious beliefs simply aren’t too concerned with how other people use their genitals or who they show their personal love to. Something to chew on there Jack.

          1. tina says:

I know what Ellen likes chewing on……..

    2. Mark Lavalla says:

      That’s Funny!

    3. Lighten up says:

I’m sorry, but not every story reported has to be all doom and gloom.

    4. mplsresident says:

Yeah! The cutting of grass is WAY more important and interesting. Geez…

    5. em0886 says:

Yeah because the Vikings stadium is such a necessity and just so important!!

  4. David says:

How about covering the racial beatings at the Wisconsin state fair? Oh , that’s right, wcco doesn’t want to because it’s black on white crime, it would be too politically incorrect.

    1. Jake says:

Maybe if Ellen had been at the fair during the “riots.”

      1. tina says:

I’m sure Ellen saw a lot of moolies when she was downtown.

    2. SB says:

Get real man. Like they are concerned about the BS you proclaim. Ohh, poor white victims. BTW, I’m WHITE, and I am NOT a victim and don’t claim to be “persecuted” like you.

    3. Mary Huckenpoehler says:

WE don’t live in Wisconisin so why should they cover that story?
Go live in Milwaukee it’s all over the news there.

    4. Far be it from me says:

Maybe because it was a local news show, not a national one. Just a thought.

  5. Common Man says:

Ellen was nothing but positive positive positive for Minnesota!!!!
We needed a little lift … thanks Ellen.

    1. meow says:

I know, she is FANTASTIC and has a huge following of people who adore her. She is GOOD ENERGY!!! We need more people like her in this world spreading happiness. WE LOVE YOU ELLEN!!! PLEASE COME BACK SOON!!!

      1. Jake says:

BARF. She is a classic NUTCASE, by ANY definition. The only thing missing from her accessory case is an AK-47.

  6. lloyd says:

I have turned off CCO. I have seen enough specials on Frank and Amelia and also his mom to last for a lifetime! Mr Shelby you are dearly missed!

    1. Jesse says:

What I don’t get is the facebook “friends” of these cco personalities. I had been talking with a coworker that I thought was fairly normal – only to learn that she follows Frank and Amelia on facebook. Who cares? Yeah, they’re nice people and all but other than caring about your general well being, why would they have any reason to care about you personally when they don’t have a relationship with you? It boggles my mind that people follow those that are well known on facebook. Are they really that lonely?

  7. rk says:

Thanks for making me laugh Ellen, you are great!

  8. Well Then.... says:

Why is the media heaping loads of time for Ellen? How come we don’t see the same when other celebrities come to town? My take is that all media, including WCCO, is biased towards certain people. Celebrities come to MN often and we never hear a peep about the good things some of them do here….

    1. Phid says:

WCCO seems to be pro-hmosxual in the stories it covers, so this seems to fit within that pattern of reporting.

      1. TL says:

The reason WCCO is giving all this attention to Ellen is stated right in the article: she’s here “to promote her new time slot at 4 p.m. on WCCO, starting Sept. 12.”

WCCO is fearful of losing ratings during the 4 PM hour and the following 5 o’clock news when Oprah is off the channel once and for all next month. Every other station that aired Oprah has the same concern at this point, since no programming can yet compare to Oprah in terms of ratings and, in turn, ad dollars.

        1. em0886 says:

Thank you for clearing it up for those who just can’t seem to read the article thoroughly and are complete idiots.

  9. snowman says:

nothing worse than somebody that thinks they are funny an they are not

  10. Gmajen says:

What about Saint Paul Ellen? We watch TV as well.

  11. meow says:

tina… ROLF!!! you have one smart grandma. Was she talking from experience?

  12. meow says:

    1. Far be it from me says:

Oprah is a racist pig, meow. I usually love your comments, but Oprah is not a good human being.

      1. em0886 says:

WHAT?!?!? hahahahahaha good one!! Oprah has done so much charity work and giving back it’s unreal.

  13. Jesse says:

Your all just jealous because she is famous and has a hot gf and your all miserable sad little people trying to burst someones bubble.. Can I get an AMEN?! ummkay!

  14. catpaws says:

Is it just me or does Ellen look like a 12 year old boy? (just sayin)

    1. Jake says:

      It ain’t just you.

  15. Malthus says:

Gay marriage is still going to go down in flames at the ballot box. Just like it has in every other state that put it on the ballot.

    1. em0886 says:

So you now speak for everyone in Minnesota? I know my family and I would vote for it to be legal…..who are you to say whether or not their love is any different than that between a man and woman…love is love and that’s it.

  16. Sarah in Outstate Mn says:

At least she came when it wasn’t so hot here.

  17. mel says:

empty, bored people will always find reasons to devalue someone, whether it’s gender, weight, color, sexual preference, religion, non-religion, eating habits, political position, finances (the lack of or the excess of), age, the list can go on and on. So some people don’t like Ellen, but the purpose in her coming was to promote her new time-slot on wcco. Why don’t you find something valid and worthwhile to complain about. You will actually be a lot happier as a person if you stop using your time to concern yourself with the affairs of other people. Plant a garden, volunteer, bring your neighbor some cookies or flowers, bake some banana bread, make a sale, sign a big contract, go fishing, go swimming, write a book. You may find yourself smiling more often; just like Ellen!

    1. Jake says:

Really?? Do you mean like how my values, preferences, CULTURE, ethnicity, has been steadily and methodically DEVALUED over the past 40 years, or are you too young to remember those days??

    2. meow says:

Mel, AGREED 100% … One of the BEST posts I’ve read in a long time. You nailed it. People need to be more concerned with how they are helping make our community a better place. Ellen helps people, she brings joy and is very generous and kind. She is a fantastic role model and a joy to watch.

    3. em0886 says:

Wow…good to see someone with some intelligence for once!! It’s quite refreshing…I completely agree with you…half the people on here are say nothing but rude, hateful, ignorant comments. I really enjoyed your comment!!

  18. Jake says:

Who the hell cares?? I’ve never watched a single show of hers, and don’t feel ONE BIT DREPIVED as a result. So, LIKE, what’s the BIG DEAL about ellen??

  19. Jake says:

I really wanted to watch the ‘CCO weather today at noon, but when I saw ellen on there, I knew it would be a circus, had to turn off the TV. Leave it to ‘CCo to turn a decent weather report into a stupid circus.

  20. Superchik1017 says:

The Twin Cities love you, Ellen! Come back soon!
