AMES, Iowa (AP) — The Bible tells wives to be submissive to their husbands. If she were president, would that apply to Michele Bachmann?

In Thursday’s Republican debate in Iowa, the Minnesota congresswoman was asked if she would be submissive to her husband.

Bachmann, the only woman in the Republican presidential field, says she interprets “submission” to mean “respect.”

She said she respects her husband, calling him a “wonderful, godly man and a great father.” And she says he respects and loves her, too.

The question by conservative columnist Byron York drew boos from the audience.

  1. MG73 says:

So if her husband doesn’t like the way she’s doing her job as POTUS and asks her to make changes to her policies, is she going to “respect” those wishes and be a good submissive wife? She already said that she became a lawyer upon her husband’s suggestion, because she is a good submissive wife. . . so this question wasn’t a stretch, it was completely and painfully fair.

How is the clinic ripping people off?

If you think taking funds from the government is ripping people of, then Obama care must be the biggest heist ever.

    1. Tom says:

      @ Bob

Bachmann bad mouths gov’t programs and govt spending but apparently it is different when she and her hubby is getting gov’t money. They are hyprocrits!

And by the healthcare industry was getting away with biggest heists ever before Obama even touched it! And of course the GOP was defending that heist!

      1. B.s. says:

Tom, they do not get the money, the customers do, and the customers chose to spend it at their clinic.

        Come on, you know better.

        1. Huh? says:

Customers get what money? You’re saying the customers (meaning patients?) are getting money to attend the clinic for services? Who’s paying them? Then in the next breath you say the customers choose to spend their money at the clinic? You’re making no sense.

        2. Tom says:

          @ BS

The customers get the money? When you go to the dr do you get the money? And by the way Bachmanns got gov’t money for their farm!

      2. Monty says:

No different than a liberal saying we are going to raise your taxes when they make sure they are taking all the optional deductions they can. I am not saying it is right, it is just what all politicians do. To single out Bachmann for this is just a scare tactic.

    2. kman says:

Byron York. SHAME ON YOU, YOU IDIOT.

    1. Tom says:

      @ Dean

I am very Liberal! But what was wrong with the question? I thought social conservatives loved answering questions like that!

      1. hereandnow says:

she actually thinks women will vote for her.

  6. Dean says:

To Danny Urban, come on, get real.

  7. Nate says:

I love that she chooses to “interpret” the Bible to her wishes when she wants but in other cases takes it literally. She is such religious nut it scares me to death. She is governing on her religious views and that is not right in a country like the U.S.

    1. Michele is an idiot says:

she appears to do the same with the constitution!

    2. Tom says:

      @ Nate

And that makes you wonder why the social conservatives in the audience booed the question? Doesn’t make sense! But nothing social conservatives do makes sense anyway!

  8. Pat says:

Are they going to ask all of the men if they like their wives to be submissive? Or if they like to dominate women?

    Seems only fair.

  9. Ted says:

Her answer that submision is their respect for one another in context to her husband telling her to go to school to learn tax code that she did not want to but went because she is submisive to her husband as God told her to be.. was that respect for one another or respect to God to be submissive to her husband? I think it is a fair question. I think her answer was a lie but not really to get around the truth which is, yes, she is submisive to her husband. And the next question would be, then shouldn’t we then know more about your husbands view if we wish to vote for you as our next president? If her hasband plays such an intrigate role in her decisions, and she is running for president, it was a very good question. Her answer told me she will say anything to get elected…

    1. frozenrunner says:

INot in defense of the former Miss Amble, but has not the right wing always said anything to get elected? (You can acuse the left side of promising to buy everthing but they come back with they were turned down). When it comes to religion, these peole seem to cherry pick what parts to believe and what parts do not exist, much like facts on any other subject.

      1. Monty says:

Although I have not noticed, I do not have a problem with her apparent change of stance. picking and choosing what to believe and when, that is what most people do most of the time. You should adapt your views if the facts change. If you held firm and unwavering to a belief system you are an idiot democrat or idiot republican incapable of independant thought or leadership. But taken too far adaption of beliefs can become rationalization, and that is another problem.

  10. Independent Voter - Make up your own mind! says:

Was this question posed to the male candidates about their wives or significant others? The answer is no, and therefore this question was inappropriate to ask. Disrespectful. It is a shame our media has become less and less relivant and more about entertainment.

When did the media and journalists lose perspective on reporting the news and begin creating or being the news themselves?

    1. SnowFire says:

I for one wanted to know if she literally follows her religion or not. The answer was a lose/lose and so she just lied a little and can just ask for forgiveness later.

Independent voter – our media is asking questions that are representative of the voters and I totally support this question and I would have asked it myself if I had that opportunity. This is just the tip of the iceberg of the questions that should be asked of those seeking the highest office in the land.

      1. markH says:

I fully agree with your comment.

  11. See BS says:

Did big media corporations ask Obama stupid questions like this?

More double standards from liberal media Fascists.

    1. Rush Lardass says:

No the republicans already asked all of them.

    2. RUSH LARDASS says:

      1. See BS says:

Fox News hasn’t had a corporate media monopoly on our political process for the past 60 years.

And I don’t remember Obama being interviewed by Rush Lardass either.

    3. sw says:

Umm, yes. They continue to ask him if he is a US citizen. Not really a double standard at all.

  12. SnowFire says:

See BS -shouldn’t you just quietly turn the other cheek?

  13. Jojo says:

  15. Bob65 says:

  16. Mel says:

This verse is often misunderstood, misquoted and misused. As for any literary work, you can’t take one line from the book and develop an educated opinion of the whole book. No one mentioned that the following verse says, and submit to one another in love.” I don’t argue that this verse has been severely abused by a lot of leaders in the church and has caused significant damage to the lives of women and families. It has also caused a lot of women to run as far away from the church as they can. If the verse meant that a woman has no rights, no voice, no value, then, from a Christian perspective, Jesus would have only died for the sins of man, not woman. I am speaking from from a christian perspective to the best of my ability, but women were created as a solution to a problem. God said it was not good for man to be alone, so He created Eve. He didn’t create Eve to be a slave to Adam, but a helpmate in stewarding creation. Woman reflect the nurturing tender and discerning character of God. The question was meant to ridicule Michelle and her religion, minimizing her validity as a candidate, and devaluing her as a Christian woman. But, I don’t blame the reporter or others for being offended by this reference to the bible BECAUSE it has represented the subjugation of women. That is not the heart of God, nor is it His intention. “In Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female.” We are equal.

    1. Maureen Anderson says:

Mel- not looking for a dissertation from someone who knows something, wanting to know what a candidate who espouses a literal interpretation of the bible would act on in office. She spouts it to her money people when it empties pockets. The question was legit because it follows up on statements she has made. But I’ve known her since ’98 and expect her to bully and lie her way to more money – that’s her goal (NB Palin) in the long run and always has been. She doesn’t do legislation, only appearances. We are right to question her outrageous statements.

    2. markH says:

As people believe, so they will act. Bachmann makes enormous claims about her knowledge of, and interaction with a supernatural world. Now, I believe it is necessary to call these ideas out into the light of day so that they can be scrutinized and considered by the voters. Bachmann goes to great lengths to align herself with the Christian faith, therefore the mandates and injunctions to believers that are found in the bible are absolutely relevant to this discussion.

Your claim that women were “created as a solution to the problem” and other such nonsense (solution to WHAT problem?) flatly ignore St. Paul’s instructions to women to “keep quiet in church” and to “cover your head” and “submit yourselves unto your husbands.” You are attempting to rationalize and relativize an ancient text’s claims to fit a modern secular society-it just won’t work. Peace.

    3. Stien says:

You forgot to add the last part to your quote………”unless you happen to be gay” I know… I know…. they talk about that in the “Great Book” too. That whole interpretation thing again!

      1. Mel says:

There would be a little confusion as to whom would submit to whom in your case 😉 See, some christians do have a sense of humor. The door was wide open and I just couldn’t resist.

  17. schae says:

All I’m going to say is that the only thing Michele Bachmann knows how to do is run her mouth. She is all talk with NOTHING to back it up. She hasn’t done a thing in Congress. Not only has her husband’s clinic taken Medicare/Medicaid money, but she and her family have received over $800,000 in federal farm subsidies that they were NOT entitled to. The only thing Michele Bachmann cares about is her own political career and that’s it.

    1. Monty says:

In-laws farm, not her family. And politico says it was north of 250k. never heard anything about them being not entitled to that money either. So who cares what her in-laws family does as long as it is legal?

  18. Idiots abound today says:

Were the male candidates asked if they would refrain from adultery, one of the Ten Commandments? Probably not. Nothing of the like of being less, is mentioned for women in the Commandments. What is missed to most is to “Submit” also means to offer an opinion which is probably what has been twisted over the years. She is not my candidate, but that question is Ridiculous!

  19. markH says:

Bachmann’s response is so typical of today’s Christian who engages in selective interpretation of scriptures (Biblical ones; there are other foundational texts for other religions) to suit her needs. Anyone can cherry-pick whichever verses he/she wants and prove just about any point-the bible is, if anything, extraordinarily elastic.

Further, if “submissive” means “respect” then we simply cannot trust the veracity of any biblical statement and words have no meaning. Simply put, MB latches on to Christianity because she knows that religion is her ticket to the White House-she cannot make it there on her political tract record.

    1. Michele is an idiot says:

It really depends on what the definition of “is”….is.

  20. StraycatStrut says:

‘CCO with top ten liberal left journalism at its finest. Who cares? Give me some News I can Use. Is the next news story going to cover Obamas pink underwear and why he wear it…?

    1. Mel says:

You are right about that. Of all the questions the candidates were asked, CCO chooses this one to capitalize on. How about the economy, the war, the environment?

    2. Stien says:

That’s awesome! Since when has substance made for a good story? What planet do you live on these days? If Obama wears them….coming soon ….coming soon. Journalism!!! Now that’s rich! Since when can you turn to any source of news and call it journalism? Pure trash, weather it be for the left or right.

  21. Spending yer $$$$ says:

I no longer Pray as Marcus told me I cannot until I totally change my ways which I am not inclined to do
He would chant and chant and then play a video of Michelle praying, then chanting, then annointing herself with the (un)Holy water from a Johnny Walker bottle as she slugged down some little white pills. I dunno – the bill came and it was $1145.00 but cost me nothing as it was going to the gubbermint for payment.
Thanks everyone for paying it but it was a waste of your money

  22. Judi says:

What a stupid question. Being submissive to her husband has nothing to do with running the country. Whoever asked this question just does not have anything worthwhile to report about. Get a life, Mister, and hunt for something else.

    1. Registered Voter says:

Does she believe gays are bad because of the bible?

If so, then this is just one of a million questions she should be asked until she slinks off the stage and back into her cage.

      1. Monty says:

So what if she did believe gays were bad? What if she thinks slavery is bad because of the bible? Do you really think if she were president that one belief would actually matter? Cause Congress makes the laws…just saying.

  23. Deep Thinker says:

Michelle Bachmann…..coming to a universe close to you shortly….

    1. Michele is.. says:

…living proof that “they” have landed.

  24. sw says:

I do think this question has substance. She brings the bible into her speeches often, so it makes sense to ask some clarifying questions. It was a religious and women’s rights question, and as a woman, I do think it’s important to know where she stands on this. Many Christian conservative women believe that they should be submissive to their husbands; it’s not an “out there” question. As for WCCO covering it, it’s something different that she’s been asked that we haven’t heard before, therefore, it makes sense to report on it. We know what she’s said about the debt, war in Afghanistan, and the environment.

  25. Mrs. Obamas ample behind says:

We know who wears the pants in the Obama family.
