Police Investigating Officer Involved Shooting In Mpls

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities are investigating an incident where a Minneapolis Police officer shot and injured a suspect during an undercover narcotics investigation Tuesday night.

The incident happened at about 6:30 p.m. The man was shot near 20th Street and Nicollet Avenue. Police were attempting to arrest the suspect, and rather than complying with officers' orders, the suspect attempted to ram a number of officers on the scene with a vehicle.

That's when an officer opened fire on the suspect vehicle.

"As many that could be fired in 15 seconds, it was intense," said neighbor Raymond Perry, who said he could smell the gunfire on the street, and counted up to 18 shots.

Chief Deputy Robert Allen said the investigation is only beginning.

"Narcotics investigations can be very dangerous, it's why we use a lot of people when we undertake them. It's a risk. Unfortunately it is something we have to do to prevent violence in the city because so much violence is tied to narcotics trafficking," said Allen.

The man fled the scene in the vehicle down an alley until he stopped on 22nd Street West between Nicollet and Blaisdell Avenues and was arrested. Police said a second suspect was in the vehicle and fled the scene but was not located.

There, authorities discovered that the suspect had sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound. He was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center. Authorities said no officers were injured during the incident.

The officers involved in the incident have been place on administrative leave, a standard procedure in these types of cases.
