Military Funds Awarded On 9/11 Anniversary Weekend

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- To mark the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, the group known as "Minnesotans' Military Appreciation Fund" presented 10 recipients with monetary grants at the State Capitol on Friday.

Two of the grants went to the families of fallen soldiers who died in combat after the terrorist attacks.

Other recipients included personnel wounded in combat, including Marine Corporal Derek Goodridge of Minneapolis, who lost an arm in Afghanistan. He received $2,000.

Corporal Goodridge said he is impressed that there is such a program.

"To have an organization, that makes me feel good inside to actually be able to be there and receive something like this," he said.

Since its inception in 2005, the program has awarded 12,000 grants worth a total of $7 million.
