St. Paul Asks Residents, Businesses To Help Water Trees

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- The city of St. Paul is asking residents and businesses to water trees both on public and private property after the city says they are showing signs of "stress."

St. Paul Parks and Recreation director Mike Hahm said the lack of rain has caused trees to wilt and while others are turning brown.

The city has about 130,000 public trees. They recommend people water the tree weekly by using a trickling hose for several hours.

Hahm said stressed trees are more likely to pick up disease, infection or be invaded by insects. This can happened especially in younger trees

According to the city, the last major rainfall of more than an inch was on Aug. 16.

Residents who would like a slow release water bag to help water recently planted public trees can call the city's forestry unit at 651-632-5129.
