Deputy-Involved Shooting In Winona County

MINNESOTA CITY, Minn. (WCCO/AP) -- The Winona County sheriff says a deputy fatally shot a man who pointed a gun at himself and then at officers.

Sheriff Dave Brand says he was notified of the shooting in Minnesota City about 12:30 a.m. Thursday. He says officers were not injured.

KAGE radio says Brand called in the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to investigate. The state Department of Public Safety says deputies and police had been looking for the man described as suicidal. They encountered him on a bridge in Minnesota City about 11 p.m. Wednesday.

A department release says after repeated efforts to get the man to drop his weapon, he pointed it at officers and was shot by a deputy.

That deputy has been placed on administrative leave as standard procedure dictates.
