Minn. Medical Delegates Debate STD Screening

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) -- Minnesota Medical Association delegates plan to vote on a resolution Friday that recommends all young adults get screened for chlamydia.

The resolution backs screening for everyone 15 to 25, whether their sexually active or not. That would go beyond the national guidelines which recommend screening only females who are sexually active.

The resolution is in response to a growing number of cases of the sexually transmitted disease in Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Health's Candy Hadsall says there's a "chlamydia epidemic" in the state with more than 15,000 cases reported last year. Left untreated, chlamydia can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility in women.

The Duluth News Tribune says the association's House of Delegates meets at the Duluth convention center Friday.
