Tommies Blog: St. Thomas Rolls In MIAC Opener, 49-14

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The St. Thomas football team faced another 2-0 team in its MIAC opener on Saturday, and left little doubt as to how they would fare in their first conference battle.

The Tommies scored the first 42 points in the contest and got four touchdowns from Colin Tobin in a 49-14 victory over St. Olaf at O'Shaughnessy Stadium. Tobin also scored four touchdowns in the Tommies' win at River Falls (Wis.) two weeks ago. In this win, he scored on runs of 3, 31, 1 and 10 yards on the way to an 87 yard day on the ground.

Dakota Tracy ran for a touchdown and threw for another, a 65-yard pass to Fritz Waldvogel, as St. Thomas outgained St. Olaf 442-253 in the contest.

"It was a nice game. The great thing about it is any time you face a familiar foe, there are really no tricks involved. The team that executes the most wins pretty much every time," said St. Thomas coach Glenn Caruso. "When we beat them last year every little thing went our way. But we had to overcome a lot of adversity this time around."

With the long touchdown catch, Waldvogel set a new St. Thomas record for career receiving yards. He already holds school records in career catches (234) and punt return yards. He currently has 5,892 all-purpose yards, just 152 yards short of a 21-year-old school record. Waldvogel told media after the game he's glad to have the record behind him and wants to focus on the team's success the rest of the season.

"He really doesn't care about stats. We have a lot of guys who have a lot of stats, but they don't give a darn about any of them," Caruso said. "He's a selfless guy. When your best athletes are like that, that's when your program is on the right road."

St. Thomas (3-0) hits the road Saturday for what should be a tough match-up at Concordia College (Moorhead). The Cobbers took St. John's to overtime last week, but lost 28-21.
