MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A ramp going from southbound Interstate 694 to Interstate 94 east was closed after a semi flipped on its side.

The Minnesota State Patrol said an 18-wheeler rolled on its side at the exit ramp in Woodbury, Minn. just before noon Wednesday.

Lt. Eric Roeske with the Minnesota State Patrol said no one was injured. There were reports of some oil leaking from the truck.

The ramp was closed while crews worked to flip the truck upright and clean up the accident.

Ok, seriously, what is wrong with the semi drivers lately? First the rollover on 35W at 94 yesterday that snarled traffic all afternoon, now this one today? Geez.

I’ve lived in Woodbury for 30 years, and trucks rolling on that particular ramp is nothing new. It happens several times a year. I think it’s long past time for MNDoT to reconfigure that overpass and ramp system. Driving home approaching the bridge during rush hour, you’re going 60 just before you reach it, and then you come to a dead stop and inch over the bridge and then immediately shoot back up to 60. Trucks coming onto 694/494 have no ability to pick up speed and trucks going from 694 onto 94 need to slow to a crawl so that they don’t roll on the ramp.

Then why don’t they all roll over?

Because most semi drivers understand they have to slow WAAAAY down before they enter the ramp. If they head into that turn going too quickly, the weight of the trailer and centrifugal force combine to form an overturned semi.

I concur with Jenny – this isn’t anything new. That intersection is notorious for semi rollovers and massive backups. The 694 South to 94 East intersection was not designed to handle the amount of traffic it carries today – bad design a long time ago.

They need to put some Z-rated Goodyear Eagles on those bad boys.
