Family Celebrates Life Of Man Killed In Boating Accident

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Hundreds packed into the Maple Tavern In Coon Rapids, Minn., Saturday evening to celebrate the life of a father who died before he could see the birth of his second child.

Luke Pohl died in a boating accident on Lake Hallie in July.

Family, friends and strangers came out to help raise funds to support the family Pohl left behind.

Five-year-old Austin keeps a picture of his dad Luke with him at all times. Images of Austin and his dad Luke were all over the basement of the Maple Tavern, where hundreds gathered to bid on silent auction items; it was a chance for people who knew Luke to come out and support his family.

Heather Pohl, Luke Pohl's wife, said, "It's kind of bittersweet time to have everybody together."

Heather Pohl is three months away from delivering Luke Pohl's second child, Mason.

Now a single parent, she has had to face many challenges. This benefit gives people an opportunity to show her that she is not alone.

Heather said Luke took to being a father immediately. Videos of him and Austin were shown throughout the benefit.

She would rather remember the good times and the three words they always ended each conversation with: I love you. Pohl uttered those words before he got on a boat with his brother and several friends.

They collided with a speedboat, and four people died.

Heather said her life is now focused on the future of her boys.

"Making sure they have a happy future and that they live through the memories of their dad and know a lot about him," Pohl said.

The money will help Heather Pohl with expenses that have popped up since Luke's death.

If you would like to help you can donate to the Luke Pohl Memorial fund at any US Bank branch.
