MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The border battle is a problem that plagues many families in Minnesota and Wisconsin. And if one parent is a Vikings fan and the other a cheesehead, who do the kids root for?

Nine-month-old Desmond Johnson is the object of his parents’ affection, but with football season in full swing, he also happens to be the cause of a big dilemma.

“I think it wasn’t until this season started that we needed to figure this out,” said Desmond’s mother, Emily Johnson.

Desmond is stuck in the middle of one of the NFL’s biggest rivalries. Emily is a die-hard Green Bay fan, having grown up in Packer household.

“I took drum lessons from the guy who does the ‘Go Pack Go,” Emily said.

On the other hand, Desmond’s Dad, Brady Johnson, bleeds purple and gold.

“I remember when I was little getting autographs in Mankato,” Brady said.

When it comes to Desmond’s future team, neither parent seems willing to bend. So, the Johnson’s decided to leave it up to the public. On SportsIllustrated.com there is a spot where you can make the choice for them. Visit the site and vote if Desmond will become a Vikings or a Packers fan.

“We decided at the end of Halloween, 10/31, midnight, whatever the poll decides is where we will go,” Emily said.

Purple pride had the lead Saturday afternoon with 54 percent of the vote.

“People probably resent the Packers being undefeated and just winning the Superbowl,” Brady said.

“I think it’s all about fatherly bond that does make sense to me,” Emily said.

With one parent looking to be the odd man out, the Johnson’s are already thinking of a compromise.

“Maybe a second boy,” Brady said.

The Johnson’s did put Desmond on the Packer season ticket waiting list. He’s number 85,000.

Talk about shallow: not only the breeding “parents” but the so-called professional journalists for running garbage like this.

  8. JC says:

This is a cute and light-hearted story that many people living on the border can relate to. It is a fun story that has national attention and nice to hear in the mix of all the serious news stories.

  9. RIII says:

No wonder kids are fat and stupid. Desmond’s future will be a future couch potato..

I love it! My husband and I have the same situation, he wound up winning out! Cute story, cute baby, thanks!

  12. Waste of air time. Stupid. says:

I can’t believe WCCO actually gave this about 5 minutes of air time on the news last night. This has to be the most stupid “news” story I’ve ever heard. It’s not entertainment or human interest either. It’s just plain STUPID! When it became obvious WCCO wasn’t going to move along to something of interest, I switched to channel 5 … WCCO has really gone down hill lately – in pretty much all respects.

  13. Family matters says:

It is very apparent that Brady and Emily love their son. He is happy, healthy, and well taken care of. After all those needs are met what’s the harm in adding a little fun into the mix. Maybe instead of wasting time writing rude comments you should focus on yourselves.
Your son is perfect, enjoy your LIGHTHEARTED banter!

  14. Dissappointed says:

It is amazing this story is getting news coverage. How embarrassing for the kid. I’m glad their not my parents. I wonder if they need help telling time. I’m sure WCCO could have found something more worth while than waste our time with this news. Another reason to think about listening to another news channel.

  15. Adam says:

I’d day 17,000 votes on SI.com makes it an interesting story. You could have stopped at the headline but you read on. I think it’s kind of a neat thing…

Good luck Brady, you have my vote!

Oh man, I’m voting PACK… at least 10 times. GO PACK GO, join me Packer fans!

  19. Smiley says:

Too bad that so many people don’t have a sense of humor, and they are MEAN. Obviously they don’t have enough to do in their lives but to make other people unhappy. Yes, this is news! It takes us away from the harshness of the world. Nothing wrong with that. Thank you for the laugh Emily and Brady!!! The Queens don’t stand a chance. GO PACK GO!!!
