Tommies Blog: St. Thomas Beats Gustavus To Clinch MIAC

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) – The St. Thomas football team, ranked No. 3 nationally, beat Gustavus 20-7 on Saturday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium to clinch at least a share of the MIAC title.

The Tommies (9-0, 7-0) face Carleton in Northfield next Saturday. A win there would lock up the outright conference title and a trip to the NCAA playoffs.

St. Thomas got out to a 20-0 lead before Gustavus scored in the fourth quarter to avoid a shutout. Dakota Tracy passed for 201 yards and two touchdowns. Fritz Waldvogel caught seven passes for 111 yards and a touchdown, and Dan Noehring caught a touchdown pass in the win.

Colin Tobin ran for 62 yards and a touchdown in the victory. It was the final regular season home game for the team's seniors, but the Tommies will likely have home field advantage throughout the playoffs as they've been ranked in the top five in the nation most of the year.

Jack Gavin led the St. Thomas defense with two interceptions, while Tony Danna led the team with eight tackles.

St. Olaf, which is one game behind St. Thomas in the conference standings, shut out Hamline 40-0 on Saturday. The Oles would need St. Thomas to lose to Carleton next Saturday and win their last two games against St. John's and Concordia to share the conference title.
