Family Identifies Hit-And-Run Victim; Suspect In Custody

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Police have released the name of the person arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident in Minneapolis on Saturday. WCCO-TV has also learned the name of the victim of the crash.

Wesley Gubbin, 27, turned himself in on Saturday night. He has been booked in the Hennepin County Jail on probable cause criminal vehicular operation.

The victim of the hit-and-run has been identified by his family as 61-year-old Thomas Malloy of Minneapolis.

The accident happened just before 11 a.m. Saturday when someone hit a bicyclist who was crossing the street at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and West River Parkway.

Malloy died at the Hennepin County Medical Center at approximately 2:30 p.m.

After the accident, police were searching for a brown pick-up truck with a homemade camouflage paint job.

Gubbin turned himself in to police around 8 p.m. Saturday. Investigators haven't yet said what may have happened that caused the accident.

Malloy was headed to synagogue, according to James, the victim's brother.

"It was a nice day," so he was riding his bike, his brother explained. "He rode a lot; it was cheaper than using his car to get around."

"Tom was a pleasant kind of guy, real smart, well-learned. Everyone you talk to would say he was one of the smarter guys to come out of Kenyon High School," said James.

Thomas Malloy grew up in Kenyon but he's lived in the Phelps neighborhood of Minneapolis for 20 years.
