Northeastern Beats Minnesota 3-2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Northeastern took a 3-1 lead early in the third period and survived a late goal by Minnesota to beat the Gophers 3-2 Saturday in the championship game of the Mariucci Classic.

Garrett Vermeersch scored the game-winner on the power play at 14:23 of the third period, giving the Huskies (8-7-3) a 3-1 lead.

The second-ranked Gophers (15-6-1) pulled within a goal on Taylor Matson's short-handed tally at 19:42. Minnesota's first goal by Nate Condon in the first period also was short-handed and gave the Gophers a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies responded with goals by Vinny Saponari and Steve Quailer.

Chris Rawlings made 31 saves to help Northeastern win its second Mariucci Classic title. The first came in 1977 over Minnesota.

The Huskies' eight-game unbeaten streak is their longest since 1985-86.

Minnesota played without top scorers Nick Bjugstad and Kyle Rau, who were with the U.S. World Junior Championships team.

Kent Patterson made 27 saves for the Gophers.
