Split Rock Plans Major Campground Expansion

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A North Shore landmark, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, is planning a major campground expansion.

The park draws over 340,000 visitors annually but its campground has only 20 cart-in sites and four lakeshore backpack sites that frequently fill up in the summer months. None of the existing campsites have electrical hookups for recreational vehicles.

The park is planning to quadruple its capacity by adding up to 77 drive-up campsites with electricity, and four camper cabins, about a half-mile north of the existing camping area. The new campground would be northwest of Highway 61, back from Lake Superior. The project would be completed in two phases, with work starting as early as this summer.

A public comment period on the project's environmental assessment worksheet is open through Jan. 25.
