Minn. Sexual Orientation Discussion Policy Debated

COON RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) — The teachers union in Minnesota's largest school district is urging its school board to drop a proposed policy on handling controversial topics in the classroom.

Local President Julie Blaha told the board Monday night the union supports dropping the current policy that requires teacher neutrality on matters of human sexuality. But she says a proposed replacement policy, requiring teachers to refrain from stating their views on controversial topics, doesn't solve the problem.

More than 30 people testified, including several parents who argued for maintaining the existing neutrality policy.

Under the current policy, teachers must remain neutral if the topic of sexual orientation comes up in student-led discussions. Some people believe that's led to the bullying of gay students

The board is scheduled to vote on the propose change Jan. 23.
