Officials Kennel Beargrease Race This Year

DULUTH, Minn. (WCCO) -- Winter has yet to make much of an impression on Minnesota, and the recent lack of snow has led to the cancellation of a popular event on the North Shore.

Officials announced that there would be no John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon this year.

The 29th annual race was originally scheduled to start Jan. 29, but the lack of snow near Duluth forced organizers to call it off.

Organizers thanked sponsors and volunteers, citing "a fantastic field of racers who will be back next year to compete on the North Shore trail."

The last time the event had to be cancelled was in 2007.

Organizers said that other events connected to the race -- including a contest to choose the cutest puppy -- will still be held as scheduled. There will also be a silent auction on Friday, Jan. 27.
