Police Standoff Ends Peacefully In St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) – A standoff that went on for more than five hours ended early Tuesday evening when a 52-year-old man surrendered to police in St. Paul, according to Police Spokesperson Howie Padilla.

The incident started at about 11:20 a.m. Tuesday when the man's relatives called police asking them to check on his welfare because they hadn't been in contact with him for several days. When authorities arrived to the 700 block of Otsego Street, they found the man inside his vehicle.

A standoff ensued as the man sat in his vehicle with its doors and windows open while communicating with police. Authorities evacuated a two-block area around the vehicle and closed off streets near the incident as a precautionary measure.

Police said the man got out of his vehicle at about 4:55 p.m., but did not comply with officers' demands. Police used what they described as a "less lethal" means to bring the man under control and take him into custody.

The man, who has not been identified, was transported to Regions Hospital for a full evaluation. Roads around the incident were reopened to traffic at about 6 p.m. after authorities determined there was no threat to residents or the community in the area.

Police are still investigating the incident to determine what exactly led up to the standoff.
