Police: Minneapolis Firefighter Arrested In Drug Probe

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Minneapolis firefighter has been arrested in a narcotics investigation, accused of having meth on him -- at his station.

According to police, Lawrence Wajda, Jr. was arrested Tuesday morning at the firehouse right across the street from TCF Bank Stadium.

Investigators say he had meth on him. A woman at the station, who is not a firefighter, was also arrested for having ecstasy. Another man outside got a ticket for having pot in his car.

Minneapolis Police spokesman Sgt. Stephen McCarty was asked if Wajda, Jr. was selling on duty.

"All that will come out in the investigation. I mean, certainly one has to wonder if there were narcotics being sold out of that station, but more of this will come out as the case unfolds," said McCarty.

Police say a search of Wajda's house turned up guns, but they're not saying if they found drugs there.

In a statement, Minneapolis Fire Chief John Fruetel said, "I am deeply concerned and disappointed to hear such allegations. Unfortunately it is cases like this where the actions of a single individual can cast a shadow on the entire department."

Wajda, Jr. and the woman are currently in Hennepin County Jail awaiting charges.
