MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The hockey player who was paralyzed earlier this year is now without a neck brace.

The 16-year-old suffered a paralyzing hit during a high school hockey game that severed his spinal cord. He was playing for Benilde-St. Margaret’s and was checked from behind.

Family members report the progress Jack Jablonski has made in three months is remarkable. What may be just as exciting for his family is that it looks like Jack is very close to being able to go back home.

The family shared photos that were taken just seconds after his nurses helped remove his neck brace.

He was shown with a big smile on his face.

His family said they’ve been waiting for this day. They said Jablonski continues to keep a positive outlook and his spirit keeps them going.

It was three weeks ago when doctors removed the halo that held Jack’s head in place.

Doctors said he would never walk or skate again. For the last two months he’s been at Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.

His story gained national attention and has leaders in the hockey community talking about ways to change the game to make it safer for all players.

In fact, Minnesota State High School League stiffened penalties on certain hits because of what happened.

As to when Jablonski will finally be able to go home, his family posted on his CaringBridge page it could happen in a few weeks.

If we do NOT know, how can we care?

    2. jackactionhero says:

His supporters are the ones keeping him in the media. I am one of them. If you want to spread the message about another child struggling with lifetime paralysis, feel free to start doing so.

But to grind that axe on someone else’s article of hope and inspiration is cowardly and pathetic. I hope someone snaps your spine.

Jacking your action hero- your lust for young men must make you their priest-
May your grave be shallow and disturbed like your personal comments towards others

I wish Jack J the best. As an amputee I have a small idea of what he faces.

It’s JAQ and his endless blather that the world can well do without.

        I am being specific.

I don’t know why, some posts don’t get published….I’ll try this again. After reading the negative posts above, I’m astounded! I guess there is no explanation for some peoples lack of sensitivity and outright meaness.

To Jack Jabs…I can see you are a tough kid. Keep fighting and improving. You make a lot of people who don’t know you personally very proud. GOOD LUCK!

  9. Chris says:

    Thanks Richard!
I agree that some people are without an ounce of tact…
We wish the best for Jabs and all others injured or ill!
The other commenters can save their 2 cents as we don’t need it…
Make it a nice holiday weekend!

    1. red says:

It is not that I do not have a heart. I wish the best for him. I was injured much the same was and still am ( I am unable to walk) but was I ever constantly in the news , no nor did I want to be. I just feel is a story that does not need to be constantly reiterated to the rest of the world.

Sometimes hearing the progress of another person who has experienced trauma is an inspiration to others who are going through the same hardship. I hope he keeps working hard…it appears to me Jack will go much farther in life or already has than most of the individuals who post negative comments.

  11. Fair n Balanced says:

    Awesome… Good luck Jabs!!!!

Any news of the other kids that have had life-changing injuries in the last few months??

    1. jackactionhero says:

These other kids should rely on their family and friends to get their stories public. It isn’t the job of the Jablonskis to do it, nor is it their fault their family and friends are keeping Jack’s story public. .

Jabs gives hope and inspires people. We need more can do attitudes in this world. That is why this story interests people. We are sick of hearing about people who make poor choices in life and blame everyone else. Keep reporting on jabs… He is an inspiration!
