Police: 6-Year-Old Boy Drowns At Hopkins Country Club

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 6-year-old St. Paul boy drowned Friday night at a Hopkins country club where he was celebrating at a birthday party, police say.

Sgt. Michael Glassberg, of Hopkins police, said Nicholas Janzen drowned around 6:24 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Country Club, located at 700 Oak Ridge Road. The boy was seen struggling and was pulled from the pool.

When police and medics responded to the scene, they found country club employees performing CPR on Nicholas. An ambulance brought him to the Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

"It's a tragic situation for everyone involved," Glassberg said. "Obviously, this is never something we want to respond to, but there were heroic efforts made to save the child's life."

Police say lifeguards were on duty during the incident.

Hopkins police and the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office are investigating the drowning.
