How Your Job Affects Your Weight

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A new survey says what we do for a living may actually have something to do with our weight.

Among the most fattening careers are those of travel agents, judges, teachers -- even doctors. Police officers and firefighters also appear to have a higher incidence of weight gain.

The website CareerBuilder pointed out that all those jobs are either high-stress or require a lot of sitting.

Here are the top weigh-gain careers, in no particular order:

-- Travel Agent
-- Attorney/Judge
-- Social Worker
-- Teacher
-- Artist/Designer/Architect
-- Administrative Assistant
-- Physician
-- Protective Services (Police, Firefighter)
-- Marketing/Public Relations Professional
-- Information Technology Professional

About 54 percent of the respondents attributed their weight gain to sitting at a desk most of the day. About 44 percent also blamed food at the office, like birthday cake or lunch brought into the conference room.

But before you go blaming your boss for your bulging belly, remember this: 28 percent of companies provide workout facilities or wellness benefits and only about 10 percent of their employees take advantage.
