Man Arrested After Making Threats To Blow Up Motel

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A man is in custody after he called police to say he had a bomb and was going to blow up the Aqua City Motel.

Minneapolis Police Sgt. William Palmer said the man called 911 around 9:15 a.m. Sunday to say he had explosives and was going to blow up the building. The SWAT Team was called at 11 a.m. to assist but was later canceled when the man was detained.

Palmer said the man talked with negotiators for more than an hour on the phone before he gave himself up.

This incident has been classified as a mental health issue. The man was taken to the hospital for medical treatment as well as a psychiatric evaluation.

Palmer said no explosives were found at the motel, which is located at 5739 Lyndale Ave S. in Minneapolis. A small number of people were evacuated from the area as a precaution.

Criminal charges may be considered in this incident.
