MOA West Ramp Still Closed After Beam Falls, Kills 1

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (WCCO) -- A section of parking ramp at the Mall of America remains closed this evening after a beam fell on a U-Haul van Friday night, killing the 52-year-old driver.

A 45-year-old woman and the man's 12-year-old daughter were also in the vehicle. They're expected to be OK.

The incident occurred on the north side of the west parking ramp near Nordstrom's. Police say the U-Haul hit an overhead beam, causing it to fall.

Anthony Stands tried to rescue the driver.

"I went back to him, to see if I could go through the back, and open the back and try to pull the wooden pieces off the back, but the security guard told me I have to leave," Stands said.

The missing beam does not affect the structural integrity of the ramp. But engineers did survey the area. They were concerned that the beam could have done damage when it hit the pavement.
