Edina Athletic Director Resigns Amid Investigation

EDINA, Minn. (WCCO) – Officials said Tuesday that Edina High School Athletic Director John Soma has resigned after being placed on administrative leave since late August following allegations made against him, according to school district officials.

Officials said Soma was placed on administrative leave on Aug. 23. Soma was also the assistant principal at Edina High School. The Board of Education for Edina Public Schools accepted Soma's resignation at a meeting Monday night. Soma told the school district he was resigning for personal reasons.

The resignation is effective immediately. Allegations have been made against Soma, leading to an investigation that was closed as a result of his resignation. It's not immediately clear what the allegations are, but a spokesperson with the Edina School District said the allegations do not involve any wrongdoing with the school district.

School district officials said Principal Bruce Locklear will head the transition in the athletic department following Soma's departure. The high school administrative staff will take over his assistant principal duties. Soma came to Edina Public Schools in 2009 and worked previously in the South Washington County School District.

We'll update this story as more information becomes available.
