Better Alternatives For Halloween Candy

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Tonight, a lot of little kids will dress up and head out to trick-or-treat, and come home with a big bag of candy.

We know all of that sugar isn't great for anyone, but not all of those treats are created equal. That's why we have a list of the worst Halloween candies and some better alternatives. You won't believe the calories in some of these fun size treats.

The fifth worst according to the book "Eat This, Not That" is the Butterfinger. It has 100 calories in a little fun size, plus 4 grams of fat and 10 of sugar. A better option is a 3 Musketeers bar. It has 63 calories and 2 grams of fat.

Fourth on the list are Airheads. They have 140 calories, 1.5 grams of fat and 19 grams of sugar. That's for a serving of three minis. A better option would be three Dum Dum lollipops, which have half the calories.

The third worst on the list is the Twix Mini. At 150 calories, they pack 7 grams of fat and 15 sugar grams. Instead, try a couple of Tootsie Rolls instead. Eating three of those versus three mini Twix will save you half the calories and sugar grams.

In second place among the worst Halloween treats are Milk Maid caramels. If you eat four of those little cubes, you'll consume 160 calories, 4.5 grams of fat and 16 grams of sugar. If you want that same texture in a candy, try Now and Laters. They have a third of the calories.

Finally, the worst Halloween candy you can eat is the Reese's pumpkin. This novelty candy has two-thirds more calories than a regular Reese's peanut butter cup. One of them has 170 calories, 10 grams of fat at 16 grams of sugar. Stick with candy corn and you'll save yourself the calorie hangover. Ten pieces of candy corn have 70 calories, zero fat grams and 14 sugar grams.
