Best Of Minnesota: Pumpkin Pie

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- This time of year, it seems like pumpkin makes its way into just about everything.

WCCO viewers picked the place with the best pumpkin pie in Minnesota, and this location has been serving up over-sized treats for decades.

It's Key's Cafe & Bakery.

Key's is a place that knows how to do desserts. And they're not shy about showing off their goods.

"You get a lot of big eyes, a lot of 'Whoa! Wow! That's huge! I've never seen cookies that big!'" said Key's general manager Joe Schlarbaum.

It's been that way ever since Barbara Hunn Meisen opened the first Key's cafe in St. Paul, almost 40 years ago.

And they've been serving up comfort food ever since.

This time of year, dessert means pumpkin pie, which is a pretty simple treat, but it's easy to mess up.

"When you just take canned pumpkin, and you don't add anything to it, and you just put it in a pre-made crust ... to me, that's a bad pumpkin pie," Schlarbaum said.

How does Key's do it?

"Ours has a little more kick to it," Schlarbaum said. "We make it a little bit spicier -- we add a little bit more nutmeg and cinnamon."
