Dog Rescued After Breaking Through Ice On Barnum Lake

BARNUM, Minn. (WCCO) – A 3-year-old German shepherd/golden retriever mix was rescued after breaking through thin ice on a Barnum lake early Thursday evening.

According to the Carlton County Sheriff's office, the 100-pound dog was more than 150 feet from shore when it broke through ice on Little Hanging Horn Lake.

The sheriff's office and volunteers from the Barnum Fire Department commandeered a 12-foot boat, securing rescue ropes to the vehicle.

A responder, equipped with water and ice safety gear, retrieved the dog and successfully brought it into the boat.

The dog is in good condition, and was reunited with its owner.

The Carlton County Sheriff's office urges caution and common sense before going out onto any frozen water. Check with your local sporting goods retailer, as they may have knowledge of current ice conditions in your area.
