3 Members Of Miss. Family Killed In N. Minn. Crash

CASS LAKE, Minn. (AP) — Three members of a Mississippi family died and one was critically injured on an icy highway in northern Minnesota, the State Patrol reported Sunday.

The one-vehicle rollover happened about 5:40 p.m. Saturday on U.S. Highway 2, about nine miles east of Cass Lake. A pickup driven by Jeremiah Statham, 28, of Foxworth, Miss., was eastbound when it lost control on the icy highway, left the road, hit some trees and a stump, and came to rest on its roof, the Patrol said.

Statham's wife, Catherine Statham, 27; son Jeremiah, 3; and daughter Emma, 1, died from their injuries. The father was taken to Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth hospital in critical condition.

All four of them wore seat belts or other safety restraints and no alcohol was detected in the driver's system, the Patrol said.

The accident scene is about 200 miles north of Minneapolis and about 130 miles east of Duluth. The National Weather Service issued an ice storm warning for that part of northern Minnesota on Friday due to freezing rain.
