Janitors Reach Agreement, Security Guards May Strike Soon

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 26 reached a tentative agreement with the Minneapolis-St. Paul Contract Cleaners Association Saturday on a three-year contract.

The agreement includes more full-time employment, a wage increase of $1.20 over three years, improved employer-based health care coverage, an additional day of sick time and the implementation of a process to determine workload amounts.

Marco Antonio Salazar, a SEIU Local 26 bargaining committee member and janitor from Brooklyn Center, says the negotiations were a success for his union.

"We went into these negotiations with a goal of more hours, better pay and employer-paid healthcare for more of our workers," Salazar said. "I am proud to say the tentative agreement we are taking back to our members has achieved those goals."

Negotiations broke down Friday between employers and 2,000 security guards with SEIU Local 26.

Guards could go on strike as early as Monday.
