Scandia Fire Rescue Captain Killed In Crash

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A long-time rescue captain for the Scandia Fire Department has died after a two-car crash closed a portion of Highway 36 near Stillwater Thursday morning.

Authorities responded to the crash at about 6:07 a.m. on Highway 36 at Manning Avenue in Washington County. The State Patrol says a 1997 Saturn was headed eastbound on Highway 36 and had a green arrow to go northbound (left) on Manning Avenue. A 2010 Dodge Caravan was headed westbound on Highway 36 and broad-sided the Saturn.

The driver of the Saturn was killed. The State Patrol identified the victim as 42-year-old John R. Larson of Marine on the St. Croix. The condition of the driver of the Dodge Caravan, a 40-year-old Bayport man, is not known.

Larson, a nine-year member of the Scandia Fire Department, leaves behind a wife and three children.

Highway 36 was reopened shortly after 8 a.m.
