Man Killed In Light Rail Crash Identified

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The 49-year-old man who was killed after being hit by a light rail train on the Hiawatha line has been identified.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner said Francisco Antonio Sanchez-Andrade, of Minneapolis, died as a result of multiple blunt force injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Sanchez-Andrade was driving at 26th and Hiawatha in south Minneapolis around 6:30 p.m. Friday when he was struck by the light rail.

Authorities said based on the initial investigation, it appeared he attempted to drive under the gate arm while the light rail was passing.

The train operator involved in the crash is on leave, which is standard procedure while investigators determine when the operator saw the car and when the brakes were applied. Generally at that intersection, trains travel at speeds of 40-50 mph.

Minneapolis Police and Metro Transit Police are investigating the incident.
