Mayo Looks For Jumpstart In Minn. House Committee

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- The bill to assist the Mayo Clinic in a major expansion is back before a Minnesota House committee where it hit turbulence last month.

The House Taxes Committee planned Tuesday to take another look at Mayo's request for a state subsidy for infrastructure upgrades in Rochester. Mayo officials say the public works projects are critical to a plan to privately finance a multi-billion dollar expansion on the famed clinic's campus.

When the bill went before the committee in March, the panel's chairwoman asked for revisions to the proposal that seeks a more than $500 million upfront commitment from the state.

Mayo is the state's biggest private employer. Officials at the medical industry powerhouse say the expansion is needed to keep pace with peer research hospitals worldwide.
