Electronic Billboards To Alert Motorists To Tornado Warnings

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- This is Severe Weather Awareness Week, and this year there is a new way for the National Weather Service to broadcast tornado warnings in Hennepin and Ramsey Counties.

They will be on 47 electronic billboards, and should help drivers the most.

"Motorists have been really traditionally very difficult to reach," Hennepin County director of emergency management Eric Waage said. "They may or may not have a radio on, they may be thinking about other things or concentrating on driving and really aren't aware that weather conditions are changing in a negative way."

Clear Channel Outdoor is providing the use of its electronic signs at no cost to the counties.
