MnDOT To Motorists: Please Use the 'Zipper Merge'

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Minnesota Department of Transportation is once again urging motorists to "do the zipper merge" in construction zones.

It's driving home the message that it's safer to continue using both lanes of traffic until reaching the merge area and then alternating in "zipper fashion" into the open lane.

Christine Krueger of the State Department of Public Safety said the biggest obstacle is "Minnesota nice."

MnDOT is running public service announcements promoting the "zipper merge." The agency began airing the announcements three years ago during the construction season.
