Sheriff: 1 Dead, 2 Hurt In St. Croix River Boating Accident

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities said one person is dead and two others were hurt in a boating accident that happened on the St. Croix River in western Wisconsin late Wednesday night.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Office was called to a boating accident on the river at about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday. When authorities arrived, a boat carrying three people was headed northbound on the St. Croix River when it hit a rock face north of the Kinnickinnic State Park beach on the Wisconsin side of the river.

Authorities said a 46-year-old man from Bayport, Minn., was driving the boat at the time of the accident. The Pierce County Sheriff's Office said one person was pronounced dead at the scene and two others, both 55-year-old men from Hudson, Wis., were transported to the hospital with undisclosed injuries.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner identified the victim as David Joseph Riley of Afton, Minn. What led up to the accident is still under investigation with assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The River Falls Fire Department, St. Croix County Sheriff's Office and Kinnickinnic State Park crews also assisted at the scene.
