Fire Started By Lightning Strike Destroys Eden Prairie Duplex

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (WCCO) –Authorities said an Eden Prairie duplex is a total loss after lightning from an overnight storm caused it to go up in flames.

Crews were called to the scene on the 10,000 block of Leaping Deer Lane at about 4:40 a.m. When authorities arrived, they had to evacuate the residence to fight the fire defensively. Fire officials said the blaze started when lightning hit the duplex. Nobody was hurt in the fire, but the duplex is a total loss.

Crews were able to contain the fire and were still on the scene Friday morning putting out hotspots.

Authorities said the roof of the garage caved in and fell onto a vehicle inside. People were inside the home at the time of the fire, and authorities said they got out safely.

The fire consumed some of the family's belongings, but valuables – like love letters between the homeowner's parents – were saved.

A crew that specializes with helping fire victims deal with water damage was on scene.
