Teen On Dirt Bike Hit By Train Near Gilbert

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – An 18-year-old man from Iron, Minn., suffered leg and arm injuries Monday night after being hit by a train while riding his dirt bike, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities were called to the accident at about 5:56 p.m. Monday near County Road 97 and Cedar Island Drive just south of Gilbert in northern Minnesota. When they arrived, a teen was trying to operate his dirt bike over a set of railroad tracks when he was hit by a Canadian National train.

The man, identified as Joseph Thomas Peterson, was transported to St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth with leg and arm injuries, although it's not known how serious they are. What led up to the accident is under investigation.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by Eveleth and Gilbert Police, Eveleth Ambulance and the Fayal Fire Department.
